Some of you appear
to have had really bad experiences with CalPOP,
things haven't been so bad for me. CalPOP used
to route out over links from aleron, level3, and
global crossing to my location. Aleron was awful,
level3 and global crossing were very impressive.
It's my understanding that level3 dropped calpops
link due to SPAM from clients, but I can't honestly
comment on what happened as I'm not sure. I know
that the current network appears to be routed
out via WilTel Communications and I'm very pleased
with it. I haven't had any downtime at all and
the network is both responsive and has fairly
high thruput. You're unable to host any IRC related
activity due to the DoS threat - as you will be
unplugged.
I origionally had
a colocated box but moved up to a more powerful
dedicated box. A definate high point to CalPOP
is the hardware they use. I had requested a little
extra in the way of RAID hard drives which they
willingly setup for me. The servers use Intel
processors on Intel server boards with Kingston
RAM and 3com PCI network cards. I'm very pleased.
As with any company
your employees can make or break you. Some of
the support techs are clueless, some are super
helpful. Of particular note I have had excellent
experiences dealing with both Song and Ken. Response
times from any tech have been very quick. Their
primary sales guy I can't say the same for...
perhaps he just works too much, but he's not very
helpful (seems like he can't wait to get you off
the phone) and often won't respond to emails.
I believe he got into trouble for previous posts
on these forums too.
Overall, while there
are some areas they could improve on I am very
impressed with their services and haven't had
any problems.
